When should children get an orthodontic check-up?
The AAO recommends that your child get an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. By this age, orthodontists
can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still
present. That's important, because some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if they're found early. Most
orthodontic patients begin active treatment between ages 9 and 14.
How long does treatment take?
Patients who need orthodontic treatment generally have one to three years of active treatment with 2 years follow up with retainers.
Does it hurt when braces are placed?
NO! Braces are "glued" to the front of your teeth so you don't feel anything when they are placed. After an
adjustment period of a couple of days, like breaking in a new pair of shoes, braces are comfortable.
If I have braces, can I still play sports or participate in band?
YES! If you play contact sports, you would need to wear a loose fitting mouth guard. When you first get
braces, it will take some time to get use to playing your band instrument.
Do I still need to see my regular dentist?
YES! You need to see your dentist every 6 months or more often, depending on your case.
